Because the human respiratory tract exposes a vast anatomic surface to the environment, it is not surprising that respiratory tract infections are among the most common of the infectious diseases. Yet even though these illnesses create substantial economic burdens and significant morbidity, the standard for evaluation and treatment remains less than ideal.
