Before physicians can recognize spouse abuse, they must be prepared to consider it as a possibility: Only then might certain signs and symptoms fall into place. Dr Hunt identifies some common characteristics and physical signs that should alert physicians to the possibility that their patient may be a battered spouse. He also provides a needed reminder that the physician's role extends beyond the office door.
