Serologic tests for syphilis

In recent years, the number of new cases of syphilis has risen steadily, yet the complexity of the disease makes testing for it especially uncertain. The authors review nonspecific and specific serologic tests for syphilis, the tests' sensitivity and specificity (which vary according to disease stage), reasons for false-positive and false-negative results, and special circumstances.
