Patients with an abnormal increase in left ventricular mass, particularly those who also have hypertension, are at risk for new cardiovascular events. The hypertrophy may be caused by several factors, and appropriate treatment of the underlying disorder may produce regression. Dr Aronow discusses the causes of left ventricular hypertrophy, its diagnosis and prognosis, and the most effective treatment.
