Because the causes of low back pain are numerous and may be psychogenic as well as organic, accurate clinical diagnosis may be difficult. Dr Bassam therefore describes the essential features of various low back syndromes, including those in malingering and hysterical patients, suggests appropriate diagnostic procedures, and sets forth basic management principles.
