Practical considerations for primary care physicians

Primary care physicians have three dosing options when prescribing drug therapy. Standard or empirical dosing methods are adequate for some drugs. Other agents are more effective when dosing is based on pharmacokinetic principles and drug concentration in the blood is monitored. The authors review all three dosing methods and discuss how therapeutic drug monitoring optimizes pharmacologic therapy.
