As Drs Volz and Nelson note, any drug theoretically is capable of causing an allergic response. However, some agents (eg, penicillin, local anesthetics) are implicated more often than others. The authors summarize methods to differentiate allergy from another mechanism causing the same signs. They also describe testing, desensitization, and alternatives for an agent to which a patient has had an allergic reaction.
