Overt thyrotoxicosis may easily catch the attention of the primary care physician, but a more subtle form may go unrecognized long enough to impair multiple organ systems and lead to substantial disability or death. Because thyrotoxicosis is strikingly responsive to therapy when detected early, the authors review diagnostic procedures and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each form of treatment.
