With strenuous exercise during hot weather, persons who are young and healthy may become as susceptible to heat illness as the elderly or infirm. If the body's cooling system is pushed beyond its capacity, hyperthermia may cause irreversible damage or death. Dr Sterner warns, however, that not all people with hyperthermia during hot, humid weather have a heat-related illness and that other causes must be excluded.
