Claudication that limits activity, hypertension in a young woman, ischemic bowel syndrome—all are signs of poor vascular supply. While such problems may not be life-threatening, they do diminish the patient's quality of life. The authors emphasize that with the availability of balloon angioplasty, which is a safe and effective noninvasive revascularization procedure, there is no longer any reason to delay treatment for such disorders. They describe use of the technique in lower-extremity, renal, subclavian, and mesenteric vessels.
