Pancreas transplantation is a rapidly expanding field that offers the hope of a cure for patients with diabetes. In this article, Drs Soon-Shiong and Lanza discuss the advances made in the past two decades as well as the obstacles that remain. The current status of the techniques—transplantation of the whole pancreas or of isolated pancreatic islets—is described.
