More than 1 million Americans may now be infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which may not progress to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) for 10 years. Therefore, primary care physicians should be prepared to care for HIV-infected patients in the early stages of their illness. In this article, Dr Sarti provides specific advice on counseling and managing these patients.
