For the last 30 years, the emergency medical response to a patient in cardiac arrest has been cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), incorporating closed-chest cardiac massage. However, open-chest cardiac massage predates CPR as treatment for cardiac arrest and may offer advantages in some cases. Dr Heller examines the two methods and compares their efficacy.
