Hirsutism is more than a cosmetic problem. Its multiple causes include such serious conditions as ovarian tumor, polycystic ovarian disease, and hyperprolactinemia. Successful therapy reduces medical morbidity and, in many cases, produces a cosmetic effect that helps improve the patient's self-image. In this article, Drs Stulberg and Caruthers describe their approach to diagnosis and treatment; therapy is specific to the cause and may include hormone manipulation.
