Sometimes a new drug completely changes the approach to treatment of a certain problem. More often, especially in recent years, a new drug finds a “niche” in the overall treatment regimen—a set of specific circumstances for which it is the best agent. The authors describe six relatively new antibiotics from this perspective and consider cost and development of resistance as well.
