Macular degeneration

A devastating but treatable disease

A patient who says that the door frames appear bent or wavy is describing a classic symptom of macular degeneration. This disease is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States, particularly in persons over age 65. In this article, the authors describe the symptoms of macular degeneration that warrant referral to an ophthalmologist and explain the primary care physician's role in patient management and follow-up.
