Constipation needs to be evaluated in all patients who complain of infrequent or difficult bowel movements. Dr Marshall outlines the diagnostic effort that should be expended, depending on the patient's age, duration and severity of constipation, and presence of concomitant symptoms, and offers advice on treating constipation that is primarily functional.
