In only about 6 million of the estimated 11 million Americans with diabetes mellitus has the condition actually been diagnosed. Thus, it is perhaps not surprising that many people who present with a “diabetic” emergency have no history of diabetes. Dr Hanley describes three of the most serious of these emergencies and suggests how to manage them.
