After extensive resection of the small intestine, patients experience malabsorption and excessive losses of nutrients. Adaptation of the remaining bowel increases absorption but is a gradual and limited process. With careful management, however, the long-term goal of oral feeding may be achieved. Dr Edes discusses how to reach this goal and improve the patient's quality of life.
