Throat culture or rapid strep test?

For years, the standard method of identifying group A beta- hemolytic streptococci as the cause of pharyngitis has been throat culture. Recently, however, a variety of rapid tests for streptococci identification have been introduced. How do these newer methods compare with the standard? Are they competing or complementary? Dr Willis addresses some important questions regarding the old versus new methods of strep testing.
