Environmental extremes place the body under enormous physiologic stress. Because human beings are essentially adapted to warm weather and ill-adapted to cold weather, hypothermia is a common occurrence. Dr Dexter reviews some of the basic pathophysiology of hypothermia and discusses predisposing factors, diagnosis, current treatment concepts, and prevention.
