Although physicians rely on serologic testing to diagnose Lyme disease because the classic rash is not always present or noted, available assays have several limitations. Dr Magnarelli explains how disease stage, cross-reactivity with other spirochetes including Borrelia species, antibiotic treatment, and subclinical infection may affect laboratory results.
