Just how common hiatal hernias are is difficult to say, because many of them are asymptomatic and detectable only on x-ray films. In some cases, the patient may have a life-threatening anatomic defect but have only vague symptoms. Dr Ellis provides a comprehensive review of the two main types—sliding hiatal hernia and paraesophageal hernia—including the underlying causes, useful diagnostic studies, and preferred treatment.
