Hyperventilation should never be summarily dismissed as the symptom of an anxiety state. Its potential causes are numerous, and many are life-threatening. In this article, Dr Hanashiro emphasizes the importance of arterial blood gas analysis in identifying the underlying cause of hyperventilation and explains why the practice of rebreathing into a paper bag may be ill-advised.
