A number of medications are available to treat peptic ulcer disease. However, recurrence is always a possibility, and measures such as encouraging patients who smoke to stop should be taken to reduce the incidence. Dr Rogers points out that prevention is an important goal in critically ill patients prone to stress-induced ulcer and in high-risk patients taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
