Many depressed patients in the primary care population seek care for symptoms not readily indicative of a mood disorder. However, an alert physician attuned to a patient's body language and appearance can readily pick up on the possibility of depression and pursue an accurate diagnosis. In this article, Dr Walton discusses current diagnostic criteria and gives practical options for pharmacologic and psychological treatment.
