Colonoscopy has achieved new levels of safety and versatility. Successful diagnosis and treatment of many colon disorders with the maneuver are now the rule rather than the exception. Even in critically ill patients, the benefits of the procedure outweigh the risks. The authors discuss four gastrointestinal disorders for which colonoscopy is appropriate in patients being cared for in the intensive care unit.
