Why the passage of small gallstones sometimes causes pancreatitis is still unclear, but it leads to life-threatening multisystem dysfunction in some people. Surgical removal of stones or the gallbladder is often necessary to prevent complications and recurrence. However, when to operate is still controversial, as is the role of endoscopic sphincterotomy. The authors illustrate diagnosis of the disorder with two representative case reports and address treatment issues.
