Diverse problems, from lead poisoning to metastatic cancer, can result in anemia, and an unfocused approach to diagnosis can be costly and time-consuming. The authors present a logical three-step approach to evaluating patients with anemia that is based on categorizing the type of anemia, establishing the presence or absence of pancytopenia, and using the reticulocyte count to direct further testing.
