With use of self-monitoring devices, patients can see the patterns of their blood glucose response under various circumstances. They can learn to adjust their insulin dose accordingly and thus receive better treatment. However, the accuracy and precision of glucose-meter readings depend on the care with which the user does the test. The authors describe common errors in technique, meter upkeep, and quality control and how to involve patients in their care decisions.
