Primary care physicians are in a good position to detect eating disorders. They may have known a patient for years and note changes in weight or patterns of behavior. In other cases, body appearance may indicate that a patient is at risk; this is particularly true when the patient is a young woman. In this article, Dr Buckner explains the thought processes, personality traits, and family dynamics that work together to create anorectic and bulimic behavior.
