When to suspect connective tissue disease

Primary care physicians occasionally see patients with signs and symptoms of connective tissue disease. When the clinical and serologic findings are classic, diagnosis is not difficult. In other cases, a history of subtle constitutional complaints and a paucity of objective findings present a challenging problem. Dr Hudson discusses current diagnostic criteria, pertinent historical features, and the role of available serologic tests.
