Overcoming barriers to meet these patients' special needs

Why is the rate of diabetes so high among minorities? One factor—genetic susceptibility—is beyond the control of physicians. However, other risk factors (ie, obesity, sedentary life-style, inadequate access to medical care) can be modified with the proper efforts and patient education. Dr Davidson describes challenges that may be encountered in reaching minority patients and methods to surmount these barriers.
