Certain drugs prescribed to combat inflammation, infection, hypertension, or congestive heart failure can cause additional problems, and reactions to the radiocontrast material administered for diagnostic tests are well known. The authors describe factors that put patients at risk for kidney damage from drug use and how to diagnose reactions by their clinical features. The most useful approach to the problem—prevention—is thoroughly reviewed.
