Is VLDL, the lipoprotein that carries triglycerides (as well as cholesterol), as atherogenic as LDL? This question has not been fully answered. However, when the level of triglycerides is high, the level of HDL cholesterol (the “good cholesterol”) is often low, a condition that in itself is a risk factor for coronary heart disease. Dr Grundy explains the complex interrelationships among the lipoproteins and provides a framework for drug treatment of moderate and severe hypertriglyceridemia.
