Americans as young as age 20 are being urged to have their total cholesterol level measured because of the prevalence of hyperlipidemia and its connection with coronary atherosclerosis. Fortunately, agents are available to treat the three major categories of lipid abnormality: hypercholesterolemia, combined hyperlipidemia, and hypertriglyceridemia. Dr Peters explains the effects of the various agents on each lipoprotein and how to best prescribe them to safely achieve the desired effect.
