Typically, patients with venous thrombosis are given a 3-month course of anticoagulant therapy. As laboratory tests for hypercoagulability have become available at reference laboratories, clinicians treating these patients have become increasingly interested in testing for the underlying hypercoagulable state. Yet are these tests cost-effective? Dr Freed takes a critical look at what they can and cannot do.
