Choosing the most appropriate agent for acute pain

Headache, back pain, and other types of acute pain are best managed with oral narcotic analgesics. The drugs' subtle differences are an important consideration in choosing optimal treatment. However, few data about these differences can be found in the literature. Drs Turturro and Paris compare the efficacy and side effects of the various opioid narcotics available and discuss their use in outpatients with acute pain.
