Exposure to air pollution or a case of the common cold, which means little to a person with normal lung function, can be very serious to a patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is helpful for primary care and emergency department physicians to know how to assess the severity of acute exacerbations and how to arrest deterioration of respiratory function.
