Heart disease after mediastinal radiotherapy

Patients who have received mediastinal irradiation are at increased risk for cardiac disease, sometimes after a long period of latency. The delayed effects of radiation treatment on the heart are not modifiable, but physicians need to know what problems to watch for in these patients. Dr Arsenian describes the cardiac abnormalities that may result from radiotherapy and suggests appropriate management.
