Ringworm of the scalp in children and athlete's foot in adults are among the fungal infections seen most often in primary care offices. The itching, which makes patients miserable, is often relieved by a topical medication, but some infections require an oral agent for complete cure. Dr Cohn describes appropriate uses of antifungal agents, available formulations, and other prescribing considerations.
