Because the US population is aging, the absolute incidence of ischemic heart disease is expected to increase markedly during the next few decades, even though rates decline. Hence, management of chronic stable angina, the hallmark of myocardial ischemia, will remain an important part of practice for most physicians and will require an integrated approach that includes an understanding of pathophysiology, assessment of prognosis, and individualized testing and treatment.
