Recognition and understanding of sexually transmitted diseases have improved dramatically during the past few years. Unfortunately, control of these infections continues to be a serious problem, and many of them are still on the increase. Dr Sargent discusses the challenges associated with identifying subclinical infections, which may unknowingly be spread to sexual partners.
