Primary care physicians may have several patients with cor pulmonale, because it is fairly common among those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. However, its early signs are nonspecific, so diagnosis may be delayed until the pulmonary disorder is severe. Dr Sherman reviews several basic concepts in detection and treatment of pulmonary heart disease and discusses differentiation of left ventricular failure (ie, congestive heart failure) from cor pulmonale.
