In the past 2 years, significant progress has been made in the understanding and treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome. Originally thought to be either a fad or chronic Epstein-Barr virus infection, the syndrome is now perceived as a chronic debilitating illness with associated immune system abnormalities of unknown cause. In this article, Dr Bell presents the current approach to diagnosis and discusses available therapies for symptomatic management of chronic fatigue syndrome.
