Dissuading patients who are determined to be tested and treated for Lyme disease is a thankless task. However, calming their fears appears to be an important part of patient care with this disease. The authors describe the problems encountered when results of laboratory testing do not match clinical manifestations. They also discuss a pain syndrome that evolves sometime after infection in some patients and may be related, in part, to sleep disturbance.
