Recognizing and managing the ‘real thing’

Sudden, inexplicable feelings of extreme terror or impending doom are a common phenomenon. Repeated attacks characterize the anxiety disorder known as panic disorder, which can produce severe medical and psychiatric complications, including a high risk for suicide. While a variety of medical conditions mimic the disorder, making diagnosis difficult, patients are highly treatable. The authors provide a detailed approach to differential diagnosis and make recommendations about patient education and pharmacologic therapy.
