Worldwide, HIV-related illness is having increasingly profound medical, social, and economic consequences. The virus has proven its ability to spread rapidly in previously unaffected populations and to ignore social boundaries. The rate of infection in the United States continues to grow, especially among women and minorities. The boundaries between high- risk groups are becoming less distinct, and it is time to recognize that no one is entirely free from risk.
