What causes spongy bone to form around the stapes and bring increasing hearing loss is uncertain. Tendencies of the disorder (it runs in families, is more common in women and rare in blacks, usually begins in the teens) do not pinpoint any common factor. The authors summarize the current theories on otosclerosis and its progression, give diagnostic tips, and describe nonsurgical and surgical treatment.
