Tips for avoiding problems in independent and institutionalized patients

Despite its well-known complications, long-term catheterization is a necessity in some patients. Teaching these patients how to bathe, which fluids to choose and which to avoid, and how to cleanse their drainage equipment encourages cooperation and minimizes infections. The author summarizes current recommendations for management of indwelling catheters and for treatment of infection, information of importance to all personnel caring for these patients.
